Christchurch: 7-8 November

My bus driver was kind enough to drop me off at the doorstep to my hostel after dropping everyone off at the main bus stop. The few minutes we had alone, he told me his life story. :) He was a very nice man who had traveled the world, had two daughters; one married, one divorsed, worked on an oilrig while traveling, worked on a cattle farm, and now drives buses. Needless to say, we had a good chat.

I got settled and then as usual off to the grocery store for the last time! My hostel was very empty but the people that were there were mainly Maori people. This was great because I really haven’t had a chance to really get to meet and chat with many Maori folk. The people I met here were very friendly.

The next day I had a lot of shopping to do! Needed to get some souvenirs, gifts, all that fun stuff! There was a nice art fair going on that Sunday, so I headed to that first. It had heaps of things to buy and lots of amazing art. I definitely lightened my wallet here. After hanging around there for a bit I headed to the center of town, Cathedral Square, there were plenty of shops to go in and out of. My wallet was as light as a feather by the time I was done here. :P

I had a nice lunch here and then headed back to the hostel to put away the goodies I just bought. It was a beautiful day and since shopping tired me out so much, I headed to the park and took a nice nap in the grass. After that, I have heard that Christchurch had an amazing botanical gardens so I went and checked that out. It was getting around dinner time and that means my LBS was kicking in so I took a quick stroll through the garden. WOW were the rourmers right. Mostly every town I have been in in NZ has had a nice garden, but I Christchurch blows them all out of the water. I knew I was going to come back here the next day to check more of it out. One of the stops I made was to a rose garden.

Always take time to stop and smell the roses!

There was plenty of other beautiful plants and flowers to see on my way through. I went back and made a nice peanut chicken and rice dinner. After dinner, most won’t believe this, but I went to a church service! The Cathedral Square  was advertising a jazz service that night so I figured I would go and check it out! This was a very informal service. There was local musician, Graham Wordrop, who played an acoustic guitar. His first two songs were “Dance With Me” by Orleans and “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor. That’s the type of service it was. The pastor said a few words here and there about the main purpose of the service, “Coming to Life.” He spoke a lot about the earthquake and his main message was not to think “Why did this happen to us?” but to think, “How has this changed us?” Graham was very talented at the guitar and the pastor made some very good points. After that it was a nice relaxing night back at the hostel.

The next day I had some important errands to run to get my plane tickets back home, check into a new hostel that would bring me to the airport the next day, do a test pack, figure out some money situations, all that fun stuff.

After running around and figuring it all out, I needed a reward. I took a tour of Chritchurch’s Fudge Cottage. It is a very small run place that puts out a lot of fudge. And we got to taste a bunch of fudge too! Yum.

They forced me to try all of these... :P

After developing many cavities, I needed to stay on my feet and walk around. The Christchurch Art Gallery was close by so I headed there. There was a very cool sculpture exhibit going on by artist Rob Mueck. This guy makes sculptures from a few feet to overwhelming large sizes. These sculptures looked so real it was frightening.

"Dead Dad" (This one made him famous)
"Mask II"

"In Bed"

After being overwhelmed at how realistic the sculptures were, it was time to get back to reality. So I went back to the botanical gardens! And again, WOW. Such a well kept garden with so many different plants and areas.

And just for my Mom…

After spending a lot of time at peace in the gardens, back to hostel! I met some people there from all over the world. Yes, again, of course, as always. :)

What a great place New Zealand is that wherever you go, it is so simple to start up a conversation with anyone. You meet such different people, but everyone gets along and there are always stories to hear and tell. It was a good last night in New Zealand.

The next morning there was fresh bread made, yum, and chatted the morning away with a guy from Italy and a girl from France. It was time to pack everyone for the last time and this time I really had to Cram. Shove. Squish. Zip. But I made it all fit! Phew :)

So New Zealand... What a great, beautiful, friendly county. I learned so much about myself and about people from around the world on this adventure. I had the time of my life and will miss so many different things about NZ, but it is time to start the next chapter in my life! All the wonderful people I met, all the countless conversation we had, all the wondering and exploring I did where I had no clue where I was going, all of the experiences have changed me for the better.

Two quotes I found true about my travels in New Zealand:

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowed-mindedness." - Mark Twain

"Not all those who wander are lost." - J. R. R. Tolkien

New Zealand, Thank you.

Dunedin: 4-6 November

That day on the bus I had a lot of work to do. I decided to cut my travels even shorter and return home 9 November. This would get me home in time for many things I didn’t want to miss and save me a TON of money. So I got a lot done considering I only got two hours of sleep the night before…snoring, smelly, loud roommates…

So I got to Dunedin and the hostel owner came to pick me up. This was perfect because HOLY BALLS does Dunedin have a ton of hills. You could eat anything and everything here and be fit if you walked everyday. So much cardio work! When I got to the hostel I felt like a zombie so between a couple of naps I continued to get my final travel days and flights home figured out. I then went into town and got some dinner, groceries, and then went to an Italian movie called “Tanti baci dopo” or “ Many Kisses Later.” An Italian flim festival is going on throughout NZ so I thought it would be a perfect thing to do for a relaxing night. And I really liked the movie!

The next morning it was a cold, gloomy, rainy day out so I just had a relaxing day around the hostel. Met some nice, smelly, dirty hippies. That afternoon I went on a wildlife tour! WOW did we see some awesome wildlife. We saw a lot of bird species and got to see the Royal Albatross at a conservation for them where they nest.

I wonder if mice are flying on their back?

After that we headed to the coast. I saw two black sheep on the way! I have seen hundreds and hundreds of sheep in NZ and I am surprised that these were the first black sheep I have seen! The title holds true! :P

Once we got to the bluffs on the coast. The gloomy weather cleared up a bit but it was winnnnnndy! When we got down to the beach, our first Yellow-eyed Penguin came right out of the water to say Hello and walked right in front of us!

Eeeee!

We moved into the beach now and saw some more Yellow-eyed Penguins and then went to go take a look at some Sea Lions!

We then went to a different area and watch many more Yellow-eyes Penguins come inform the sea and hop on and up a steep hill!

All around the bluff were many Blue Penguins in their nests!

After going to another spot to see the Yellow-eyed Penguins hop up the hill some more and see a nest up close we went up and over the hill to a spot to see many Fur Seals!

Arh Arh

I then rushed back up the hill to the bus to finally get out of the cold wind. What an experience!!! I saw sooo many awesome wildlife animals and I got to be up close and personal with my favorite animal, the Penguin!!!

That night was another relaxing night at the hostel. The next morning was again a cold and gloomy day. I did go into town to see some of the architecture of the many cathedrals around.

I went back to the hostel around mid-day and got everything ready for my trip to Christchurch! This hostel defiantly did not have any insulation. It was SO cold. Since being in NZ, I have realized I have horrible circulation in my hands! Thanks Mom, you had to give me the bad hand circulation gene instead of the musical talent gene. :P Just kidding, love you!

After sitting by a heater for a while, I was off to my last and final city in NZ!

Invercargill: 1 November / Fiordland National Park: 2-3 November

A bright and early 6 AM bus pickup time to start my three-day tour. We drove straight to the town Bluff to let people off who wanted to go to Stewart Island. I decided not to do this because the ferry ticket was wicked pricey. We then went to the most southern point of the South Island. It is cool to say that I have been to the tip of the North Island and the bottom of the South Island!

A view of Stewart Island from across the southern point.
Love the lighthouse!

We then backtracked a bit to Invercargill. Invercargill is a bust. There is nothing to do there. It was Monday and they show the last movie at the cinema at six. So our tour guide decided for us to go to The Caitlins. This is actually a huge conservation park so we just went to the most southern point called Waipapa Point. We went here to go search for sea lions….and we found some!

We walked to rocks for a bit and found some star fish, a Paua, and plenty of kelp.

That night was a very relaxing night at the hostel.

The next morning we started our way to Fiordland National Park. What a beautiful drive it was!  Since it was a tour bus, we stop at plenty of places to stop and take pictures.

I try to be an artistic photographer. :)

That night we stayed at a place called Gunn’s Camp. This was an actually camp back in the 1930’s and it hasn’t changed much since then.

Going old-school.

It was a lot of fun though!! There was this big tree near by that was hollow and you could climb up it and out of the top of it! I was the first one up and out to the top! That night the bus driver made us all “Bangers and mash” a.k.a sausages and mashed potatoes. The sausages here are NOTHING like they are compared to at home. All of the Germans I talk to feel the same way too! :P After dinner it was another relaxing night with some card games, a puzzle, and chatting around a campfire. Since this place is stuck in a time warp the generator that runs the whole place shuts off at 10:30. WOW, the stars amazing out here. Quite the sight. I even woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and with no campfire light or noise the stars were even more stunning! There was a nice stream near by to add to the ambience. ;)

The next morning it was off the NZ’s largest tourist destination, Milford Sound. The drive there is known as one of the most beautiful in the world, and I would have to agree!

Can you find me?

Then we finally got to Milford Sound and immediately boarded a ferry to go get a tour of it! Milford is actually a Fiord but the people who discovered it didn’t know that. What is the difference between a Fiord and a Sound you ask? Wellllll, a Sound is made by a river and is usually more V shaped and a Fiord is made by a glacier cutting its way through and is usaully more U shaped! So now you know! :P But it was beautiful!!!

See the elephant lying down? :P

The animals!!

Bottlenose Dolphin!

Fur Seals!

FIORDLAND CRESTED PENGUINS!!!!!
These guys look real intimidating!

After being overwhelmed with all the cliffs, waterfalls, mountains, wind, and animals, it was time to head back to Queenstown.

We didn’t stop much on the way back and but the drive was still spectacular! We did stop once for a touristy picture moment…

That night in Queenstown I met back up with Feli for dinner. She brought a friend that she met in class from Austria. It was good to see Feli for one last final time!

After chatting each others ears off we parted ways and I went back to relax at the hostel. Then the next morning I caught another bus to head to the west coast! Dunedin here I come!
